From the Tiger Beat Archives, March 1972

Happy cold weather! It’s even blowing arctic winds out here in Hollywood, so I hate to think what it must be like for all you poor folk living in North Dakota or Maine or places like that! In fact, it’s so cold even in our new big house that David’s taken to wearing two pairs of socks whenever he’s going around with his shoes off. These wooden floors get icy!
This column is going to be a little different from my usual aimless babbling. I had so much to tell you about David this time around that I couldn’t think of any way to get it all into one column that made sense until David himself helped me out. “Don’t make sense,” he said. “I don’t know if you’re aware of this, but you usually don’t, even when you try. Just give them a couple of hundred facts and let them make sense of it. They’re brighter than you are, anyway.” And he went into his room, flopped on the bed, and began strumming the guitar.
Well, I didn’t really dig everything he said, but the basic suggestion sounded good to me! So here they are. We might call this column SOME THINGS I KNOW ABOUT DAVID (AND NOW YOU DO TOO).
FIRST THING: David is an ice cream freak! He could eat it by the gallon if he didn’t sort of have to worry about turning into El Grosso, the seven-hundred-pound rock singer. His favorite flavor is chocolate chip—the kind with lots of chips in it! In fact, nothing can put David on a mini-bummer quicker than opening a new package of chocolate chip and finding about six chips in it! (Do us a favor, now that you know David’s favorite flavor. Please don’t mail us any ice cream! It’s not that cold!)
ANOTHER THING: David’s all-time favorite soup is… are you ready? Chicken noodle! He drinks it straight from a cup, like coffee or something. And then he eats the chicken and the noodles last. David can give you, in ascending order, the top five brands of chicken soup and exactly how much chicken is in each can! Now if only he could learn as much about chocolate chip ice cream, things would be a little more peaceful!

STILL ANOTHER THING…David almost never watches TV! He turns it on when the Prime Video comes on (but not for reruns) and he’ll watch maybe one other show each week, but that’s about it! The thing he watches most of all are old movies—like with Humphrey Bogart. If he doesn’t have an early call for the set the next morning, he can sit up with a really good movie until three in the morning.
STILL YET ONE MORE THING…David really does play music all the time! He has a fine collection of guitars, some really old, rare ones and some newer ones, and he plays them constantly. In fact, that’s what he does with the time he’d probably spend watching TV, if he watched TV! His favorite place to play is outside, and I’ve never heard him play any better than he did on our one-week trip to Big Sur, but now that it’s too cold to play outdoors, he’s got a favorite seat next to a window, where the warm sunlight can hit him, and he plays there!
AND THE THINGS JUST KEEP COMING… His favorite drink of all time (it makes me shudder to think of it) is hot tea with lemon and honey! It’s something he got turned onto when he was on tour and he began to get a galloping case of scratchy throat! A musician fixed him a cup and he drank it (making a hideous face because he expected it to taste like medicine), but then he decided that he loved it—and it really fixed his voice up! Now he drinks it constantly at recording sessions and carries a little thermos to the studio with him! In fact, he’s given up coffee completely, and this is the only hot drink he really likes anymore. I can’t dig it—I think it tastes like a lemon’s nightmare! But David doesn’t like my health-food milkshakes either, so I guess we’re even!
BELIEVE IT OR NOT, ANOTHER THING… David’s got a new camera! It’s a fantastic Japanese camera, like one that Kenny Lieu used when he and David were in Hawaii! David’s getting better and better at photography, and I don’t think it’ll be long before you’ll see some of his pictures in TIGER BEAT! Maybe the next poster you get of David will be a self-portrait!
ONE MORE OTHER WHOLLY DIFFERENT COMPLETELY ANOTHER THING: David’s most all-time favorite book right now is called Temple of Gold, and it’s by a man named William Goldman. I won’t tell you anything about it, because you really ought to read it—then when you and David finally meet, you’ll have something to start the conversation with! It’s a great book, and it’s available in paperback!

DAVID LOVES: Sunshine… the sea… girls with loose, long hair and no make-up… the forests and beaches of Big Sur… people who speak their mind—even if it isn’t always pleasant… laying in the sun until he goes to sleep. . . rock and roll music. . . letters from his fans.
DAVID HATES: Smog, and any kind of pollution, tinny-looking Christmas decorations in the streets…people who don’t believe in anything… oud, sudden noises…real estate developments carved into the sides of beautiful hills…Muzak…Mince pie…Spam.. people who don’t look him in the eye when they talk to him.
DAVID WOULD LIKE TO SEE:
The whole world at peace…governments giving food to the less fortunate, the cosmetic industry to go out of business, green again, clean air on the earth.
DAVID’S NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS WERE: To work harder at his acting and singing… to answer more of his mail… to be himself and stay calm even when things get crazy (like on tour) and to remember at all times how lucky he is to have your love.
