What If My Brothers Weren’t in Showbiz?

Hi! I was watching my brothers rehearsing in our music room the other day, and while they sang, played their instruments, and danced, I started wondering what they would do if they weren’t in show business!

So, I became a superspy for a few days and just wrote down what each guy did the most during his free time! Then I looked over my notes and matched the profession to each one’s free time activities. Here’s what I found out!

OTHER CAREERS

I usually found Alan in serious discussions with all the business people who are over at the house and help plan all of the boys concerts and appearances. Alan amazes me! He has such a good business head on his shoulders! He reads all those long, boring contracts and he understands each and every word! He’s always explaining things to the others! Because he so good with all those written details in business matters, I think Alan would make a fantastic lawyer!

Wayne is always reading his pilots manual racing off to get some more air flying time, so he obviously would love to be a pilot. Wayne is really a very responsible person, so would make a perfect pilot for one of those big commercial airlines. He could take care of hundreds of people during those long flights, and they would be very safe because Wayne is an excellent pilot!

DR. OSMOND?

Merrill was sort of hard to label because he divided his time between writing songs and just being nice old Merrill who would do anyone a favor. . .if they ask nicely! So Merrill would either be a songwriter, or a terrific doctor! He shows so much understanding and patience that he would make a good doctor!

Jay was easy to pick out a profession for! Jay is constantly watching football games on TV, listening to football games on the radio, reading books on football, or practicing his forward pass in the backyard. Jay eats, breathes, sleeps football! And if he ever left show business (and I don’t think that will ever come about for many years!), it would surprise the entire family if Jay didn’t go into professional football!

And Donny? Donny could never even consider another career for himself! Show business is definitely in his life to stay! But, if I really had to guess, I’d say Donny would make an expert electrician–why he helped wire our own recording studio!

Although they’re in show business, nobody gets the star treatment around our home! We’ve got lots of houseplants, and we all take turns making sure that they been watered and taken care of! We each have a week of taking care of the plants, then it’s someone else’s turn for one week! It works out pretty well… None of the plants have died or been ignored!

My main duty is to help Mother keep the kitchen pretty clean. I say pretty clean because with six brothers around, there’s usually a lot of eating going on. . .and no matter how hard everyone tries to stay neat, there’s bound to be a little bit of clutter in the kitchen!

The boys have to make sure that the music room is clean. But they like to be in complete charge of the music room because then they know exactly where each piece of instrument and every sheet of music is kept!

I think the guys have the most fun when they’re cleaning the pool! I don’t really know how the pool ever gets cleaned because every time the guys wind up having a big water fight! All of them are good swimmers (they’re good at waterskiing and surfing too!), So their water fun can get pretty hectic sometimes. . .that’s when I’m glad I’m a girl. . .they leave me out of the real rough stuff!

VERY CONSIDERATE

They’re very considerate. Whenever I’m with them all, or just one… I always feel protected and safe! I have to tell you about the fabulous gifts they gave me last Christmas–a sewing machine and a huge cedar chest that I use as my hope chest! Right now I don’t have very much in it–just some special blankets and pillowcases that my grandmothers gave to me–but I’ll be filling it slowly with lots of items that are important to me!

So besides being talented and considerate, you see that my brothers are also very generous! I’m very lucky to have them for my brothers, and I’m so glad that I can share some of our good moments and memories with you!

I’m already at the end of the page again! Next time I’ll tell you all about our tours through the Southern states of the US. Also, keep your eyes and ears alert for the boys appearance on “American Bandstand” and the first “Flip Wilson Show” for the fall! Till next month, much happiness to you!
